Behind the Scenes with The Dollie House

I recently won a Dollie House competition for a photo shoot and decided it would be the perfect opportunity to do another product shoot for Bow Peep. So this passed Saturday I met up with the Dolly House team at the Bow Peep workshop. I will share the finished product soon but in the meantime here are some behind the scene pictures.

Early morning view from the Side Street Studios parking lot. Woodstock.

Tea break time!

You can now get your Bow Peep fix from The Depot in Woodstock. They are next to the Old Biscuit Mill on Lower Main Road.

Little Ballet Dancer

Saw this little ballet dancer on a wall today while running errands. Made me stop and smile.

Open Streets

This past Saturday I took a walk to Lower Main road in Observatory with some friends to check out the first Open Streets event in Cape Town. For the afternoon Lower Main Road was closed off and no cars where allowed.
Open Streets is a citizen-driven initiative, working to design and promote streets which embed and generate respect for people, regardless of who they are, and how they move. - See more at: http://openstreets.co.za/about#sthash.dvkvse6A.dpuf

This is some info about the Open Streets movement taken from their website.

Open Streets Cape Town Manifesto
Cape Town’s streets could be much more than they are. By embracing the concept of Open Streets, all of us who use them can create places that embody respect for everyone.

We, the people of Cape Town, believe that streets should be:
Welcoming to all
Places for movement , recreation and expression
In harmony with local cultures and values
Able to meet changing needs
Contributing to a healthy society and thriving business
Part of distinctive and active neighbourhoods
Friends of Open Streets support these principles, and undertake:

To treat with respect and courtesy all who use our streets
To actively create inclusive public streets
To find ways to bridge the social divides of our city
In short: to actively create streets that embody and generate respect for all the people who use them, regardless of who they are and how they move.

I live in Observatory and it was fantastic to be able to walk all the way down Lower Main without any cars around. When we first arrived it was pretty quiet but after a while the street was packed. The vibe was fantastic, people where biking, skateboarding, and rollerblading up and down the road, we checked out a game of bike polo, visited an artist studio, left a masterpiece on the road in chalk (see pictures), and did some serious people watching (Obs is filled with interesting characters).

I really hope they have another one soon!
These are some pictures from Saturday.

It was founded in 2012 by a group of volunteers committed to a more equitable, integrated, safer and vibrant Cape Town.
Inspired by Bogota’s Ciclovia, Open Streets Cape Town (OSCT) was initially set up in order to create a temporary network of car-free areas and routes throughout Cape Town.  Following the organisation of an Open Streets day by the City of Cape Town as part of Transport month in 2012, a working group was consolidated in order to ensure sustainability for this initiative.
Open Streets has been successfully implemented around the world and OSCT draws on decades of international and local experience in re-designing and re-working streets. OSCT builds on city and civic efforts, including the 2003-2004 car-free day festivals, 2012 Open Streets and Moonlight mass bicycle rides amongst others.
OSCT works to design campaigns that raise citizen awareness, foster public debate about public streets and engage everyone in redesigning and re-working streets.

Holi One

I braved the Saturday morning shoppers and went off to Pep in search of a white T-shirt. Good thing I only paid R26 for it because its now been put in charity pile after being caked in a rainbow of powder paint which then turned a funny shade of brown towards the end of the evening. Holi One was madness! It didn't have the best music line-up but that didn't really matter, I don't think anyone was their for the music.
Everyone was there to have fun, throw paint around and act like a kid.
I think the pictures speak for themselves.
